Canadian accused of selling lethal chemical online to plead guilty to aiding suicide
The plea deal would drop 14 first-degree murder charges after prosecutors said Law sold sodium nitrite to people who died by suicide.
Kenneth Law, an Ontario man, is expected to plead guilty to 14 counts of counseling or aiding suicide in exchange for the withdrawal of 14 first-degree murder charges by Crown prosecutors.
He operated websites that sold sodium nitrite and other substances used for self-harm, shipping about 1,200 packages worldwide to over 40 countries, including approximately 160 within Canada.
Authorities in Canada, the US, UK, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand have investigated more than 100 suicides linked to Law's online operation.
Sentencing is anticipated soon in Newmarket, Ontario; aiding suicide is punishable by up to 14 years in prison under Canadian law.
