Canada Plans Ban on Imports From Israeli Settlements in West Bank
Ottawa will phase in the measure in coming months as Canada joins several countries citing legal and political risks tied to settlement trade.
Prime Minister Mark Carney's government promised weeks ago to ban imports from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, though Ottawa has not yet clarified how or when it will implement the measure.
Rising violence in the West Bank prompted the government's decision, with the Israeli human rights group Yesh Din reporting 234 incidents of settlers interrupting Palestinian olive harvesters this month.
Criticizing the policy, Noah Shack of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs argued Ottawa lacks strategic influence, stating "We should be laser-focused as a country on how we can play an impactful role in building a culture of peace."
Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar pledged "counter measures" against nations that act against Israel, following the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem by Israeli authorities.
Haaretz journalist Nagham Zbeedat noted the ban's complexity, observing that "Some Palestinians welcome any measure showing that their cause has not disappeared from the international agenda. Others question who will bear the immediate consequences of the ban.
