Canada unveils new sanctions on Russian drones, energy

  • On Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced new sanctions targeting Russia's drone, energy, and IT infrastructure at a Group of Seven foreign ministers meeting near Niagara Falls alongside Andriy Sybiha.
  • To respond to Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy grid, Canada and G7 allies aim to ramp up economic pressure on Russia to end its war and degrade Moscow's military capabilities and energy revenues.
  • The measures list 13 individuals and 11 entities, including companies linked to Russia's liquefied natural gas sector, and add 100 shadow-fleet vessels, bringing Canada's total sanctions to over 400 ships, John Boscariol said.
  • Global Affairs Canada said the measures freeze assets held in Canada and bar Canadian financial institutions from providing services, and when coordinated with the United States, Britain and European Union, they prevent evasion.
  • As Canada wraps up its 2025 G7 presidency, Anand highlighted allies' support for Ukraine and discussed sanctions hurting Moscow, with Kallas urging G7 unity and EU funding of 800 million for energy repairs.
