Canada to make Eurovision debut in 2027
CBC/Radio-Canada will reveal how the entry is chosen later this year, and Canada will become the first new country to join Eurovision since Australia.
- On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada will compete in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 2027, marking the first new country to join since Australia in 2015.
- Although Eurovision is traditionally associated with Europe, eligibility is tied to EBU membership; Canada already has historical links, including Quebec-born Celine Dion winning for Switzerland in 1988 with 'Ne partez pas sans moi.'
- CBC/Radio-Canada President and CEO Marie-Philippe Bouchard said the participation allows Canadian talent to be 'showcased on one of the most storied music stages in the world,' while Martin Green CBE, Director of the Eurovision Song Contest, welcomed the expansion.
- Torontonians are already speculating on the national entry, with suggestions ranging from Drake to Stratford-raised popstar Justin Bieber, as CBC/Radio-Canada prepares to reveal selection details later this year.
- The 71st edition of the show takes place in Sofia, Bulgaria, next May, while Canada prepares for its 2027 debut competing in the semi-finals of the global music competition.
