Canada rejects Trump's proposal to reinstate Russia in G7
Canada rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's suggestion for Russia to rejoin the G7, with Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly stating, "No way this will happen."
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office did not respond to requests for comment, while Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Liberal leadership candidate Chrystia Freeland also opposed the idea.
Russia's Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov called the G7 an outdated structure, stating, "What is currently referred to as the G7 is an outdated structure."
Stephanov emphasized that Russia prefers other forums like the G20 and BRICS, noting those represent "contemporary geopolitical realities" and provide "meaningful solutions to global challenges.
