Canada Post to convert half a million addresses from home delivery to community mailboxes
Canada Post says the switch is part of a five-year plan to move 4 million homes away from doorstep delivery.
Canada Post announced on Thursday that 37 communities across seven provinces will convert 485,000 addresses to centralized community mailboxes beginning in 2027.
Mounting financial losses drove the transition; Canada Post reported a $1.57-billion loss for 2025 and a $205-million loss in the first quarter of 2026.
Ontario leads with 158,000 affected residences, while British Columbia follows with 81,000 addresses, adding to 136,000 previously selected for conversion.
Residents will receive keys for secure mailbox access, while the Delivery Accommodation Program supports households requiring tools like Braille features or sliding trays.
Broader reforms accompany this shift, including weekend parcel delivery and potential post office closures as the Crown corporation works to overhaul its business model.
