Ottawa buys $1.6-billion stake in Cohere as AI firm’s valuation soars to $35.7-billion
The record-setting financing will fund compute infrastructure and global expansion as Cohere posts 165% year-over-year ARR growth, the company said.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada will invest $1.6 billion in Cohere as part of a $7 billion Series E funding round, valuing the Toronto-based artificial intelligence firm at $35.7 billion.
Carney stated Ottawa aims to build and secure national artificial intelligence strengths, vowing Canada will not leave the technology "in the hands of those we don't trust." The investment follows release of Canada's first national security strategy in 20 years.
German retail giant Schwarz Group led the financing round, with returning investors Nvidia, Bell Ventures, and Bullhound Capital. Cohere reported 165% year-over-year growth and serves 300 customers while committing to invest $1.7 billion in domestic infrastructure.
Under the agreement, Cohere will remain Canadian and develop fully verticalized artificial intelligence solutions for regulated industries. The company committed to expanding research partnerships with Canadian institutions to nurture the next generation of AI leaders.
The sovereign AI market is projected to reach $600 billion, driving global demand for trusted infrastructure. Cohere continues strategic expansion, including a pending merger with Germany-based Aleph Alpha to strengthen independent technological capabilities.
