Ottawa Endorses Plan to Move Marineland's Whales to U.S. and Spain
Federal officials said 30 belugas and four dolphins could be moved after Marineland’s China export bid was denied.
On Wednesday, Fisheries and Oceans Canada endorsed a rescue plan to transfer 30 beluga whales and four dolphins from Marineland to accredited aquariums in the United States and Spain.
The Niagara Falls attraction closed in 2024 following the deaths of owners John Holer and Marie Holer, after the federal government blocked a previous export deal to China.
An international consortium including Shedd Aquarium and Oceanogràfic València developed the transport plan, which Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson called "a positive step forward."
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans issued CITES permits, though Erik Nosaluk from the Office of the Minister of Fisheries said final authorization "will be issued closer to the date of transport, pending final animal health checks."
Relocation removes the threat of euthanasia for the animals, allowing the estate to proceed with dismantling the park and selling the property near Horseshoe Falls.
