Canada deploys 50 investigators to probe military base fire that killed 4 soldiers
The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is leading the probe as officials examine why training continued after the fire was known.
On Monday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that 50 investigators are probing a fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta that killed four soldiers and injured 39 others during training.
A grass fire broke out Saturday during live-fire training, but military officials believed it was contained until ferocious winds suddenly shifted and caused the blaze to jump a fire guard.
About 84 members of Charlie Company were preparing for a spring NATO mission in Latvia when the fire swept into their training area, killing Sgt. Shaun Farrell, Pvt. Aidan Goulding, Sgt. Morgan Wong, and Pvt. Hayden Lykkemark.
Nineteen of the injured remain in critical condition. The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service, supported by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, leads the probe, Carney said.
Gen. Wade Rutland said investigators will examine how the fire spread and whether military safety procedures need to change as Carney pledged to get answers 'as expeditiously and transparently as necessary.
