Canada closely following reports of plague in Russia, health minister says
Canada’s Health Minister Marjorie Michel says the government is closely following reports that a woman at a plague research institute in Siberia died.
Russian authorities say the woman contracted pneumonia from an unknown source, with no evidence linking it to the pathogens she studied.
Siberian media reported that the woman died from pneumonic plague, while local authorities quarantined a hospital and monitored contacts.
Michel says there is no risk to Canada, while Canada, the World Health Organization, other countries, and the United States are monitoring the situation.
