Health Canada Approves First Generic Weight-Loss Injection

Health Canada said Svemia met safety, efficacy and quality standards, while six other generic semaglutide submissions remain under review.

  • On Monday, Health Canada authorized Svemia, a generic semaglutide injection from Canadian company Apotex, marking the first generic version of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy approved in Canada for weight loss.
  • Svemia is a generic version of the brand-name drug Wegovy developed by Denmark-based Novo Nordisk. Generic semaglutide products are considered pharmaceutically equivalent, meeting Health Canada's standards for safety, efficacy, and quality.
  • Health Canada approved Svemia for once-weekly treatment of people 12 and over as a supplement to diet and physical activity. This is the third generic semaglutide authorized, following two earlier approvals for Type 2 diabetes.
  • Greater availability of generic semaglutide could lead to lower costs for patients and the health-care system. In Canada, generic medications are often priced between 45 and 90 per cent below brand-name counterparts.
  • Health Canada is currently reviewing six additional submissions for generic semaglutide from other manufacturers. The department expects to make more regulatory decisions in the coming weeks and months.
