Can the man behind a giant pro-Trump sign ride the president’s praise to Congress?
Trump’s backing gives the political newcomer a boost as local GOP leaders and committees line up behind rival Robert Smullen.
President Donald Trump endorsed political newcomer Anthony Constantino in the June 23 Republican primary for New York's 21st Congressional District, pitting him against Assembly Member Robert Smullen.
Rep. Elise Stefanik shocked the New York political world late last year when she suspended her campaign, creating the vacancy in solid GOP territory described as "not your country club Republican party."
Constantino, owner of Sticker Mule, has relentlessly attacked Smullen, a former Marine Corps colonel, calling him a "Trump hater" and using the derisive nickname "Slimebob."
While local Republican officials and the state Conservative Party support Smullen, Constantino has secured backing from Trump and "Highly Respected MAGA Warriors in our Movement," including Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Roger Stone.
The June 23 primary serves as a test of Trump's influence at the ballot box, forcing voters to choose between a brash MAGA disciple and a traditional conservative.
