Can Mohammad Amir register for IPL auction? Former Pakistan player eyes Indian Premier League after switching nationality
The move could remove the need for a Pakistan Cricket Board clearance and widen his franchise options, with 462 players shortlisted for the draft.
Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir clarified on Friday that he will not enter the Indian Premier League 2027 auction, ending widespread speculation about his potential participation as a British national.
Speculation emerged after Amir registered for the Afghanistan Premier League draft as a British national, prompting reports he might seek an IPL bid using his UK passport.
Clarifying his stance on social media, Amir wrote, "Hello, I would like to inform everyone that the news regarding the IPL is not correct." He also posted on Instagram: "ALL news of the IPL is fake."
Although former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood played in the IPL between 2012 and 2015 as a UK-based player, Amir's explicit denial has effectively ended any potential entry into the tournament.
Having retired from international cricket in 2024, the 34-year-old pacer continues to focus on franchise cricket, competing in the T20 Blast and The Hundred rather than pursuing an IPL career.
