Sunbird's iMessage For Android Returns After Shutdown
The $2.99 monthly service returns after Sunbird says it fixed security flaws and rebuilt its app with encryption and short media retention.
On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Sunbird Messaging returned to the Google Play Store, bringing iMessage functionality to Android devices for the general public.
Rebuilt following severe security vulnerabilities that exposed user data in 2023, Sunbird now uses AES-256 encryption and claims independent auditors found no critical flaws.
Subscribers pay $2.99 per month or $24.99 annually after a 14-day free trial to access iMessage features including reactions, replies, and high-quality media on iPhone group chats.
More than 181,000 people signed up during early access, demonstrating sustained interest despite the app's 2023 security breach history.
Sunbird plans to launch Sunbird Intelligence in Q3 2026, offering on-device AI for chat summaries and drafting, with WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger integration expected later this year.
