Evacuations Ordered in Campo as Wildfire Moves Towards Colorado State Line
A fast-moving grassfire prompted mandatory evacuations and closed US 287 as smoke cut visibility, officials said.
On Sunday, Baca County Emergency Management ordered the immediate evacuation of the Town of Campo as the fast-moving Sharpe Fire approached from the south.
Ignited Friday night in Cimarron County, Oklahoma, the Sharpe Fire pushed north and exploded from roughly 3,500 acres to more than 10,000 acres in about six hours, officials said Sunday.
A 77-mile stretch of Highway 287 closed due to smoke visibility, while officials established an evacuation shelter at Springfield Schools, located at 475 W 5th Ave., Springfield, Colo.
Oklahoma Gov Kevin Stitt activated Oklahoma Forestry Services air support for the fire, which faces a Red Flag Warning with wind gusts exceeding more than 35 mph.
The National Weather Service forecasts dangerous fire weather conditions will persist across Baca County until a cold front arrives Monday night into Tuesday, complicating suppression efforts.
