Campfire Ban to Be Lifted Across Vancouver Island and South Coast
Small campfires will be allowed, but larger burns and most other open fires remain prohibited as wildfire danger eases, officials said.
- Effective at noon on Thursday, the Wildfire Service rescinded Category 1 open-fire prohibitions, which include campfires, throughout the Coastal Fire Centre encompassing the Island and South Coast.
- Wildfire danger ratings have declined across the Coastal Fire Centre due to recent rainfall, shorter days, longer nights, and cooler temperatures. The Wildfire Service cited these conditions when lifting restrictions.
- Category 2 and Category 3 fire prohibitions will also be lifted in the Haida Gwaii Forest District; however, these fires remain prohibited throughout the rest of the Coastal Fire Centre.
- Municipalities may have additional restrictions based on local conditions, so Residents are advised to check with local government before starting open fire activities.
- Individuals who violate open-burning prohibitions face a $1,150 violation ticket; they may also face administrative penalties up to $10,000 or, if convicted, fines up to $100,000 and one year in jail.
