Cambridge Heartwear Lands £184m NHS Contract for World's First Reusable ECG Wearable
The agreement gives Integrated Care Boards access to the world’s first reusable wearable combining ECG monitoring, artificial intelligence and wireless charging.
On Wednesday, Cambridge Heartwear secured a landmark £184 million tender with the National Health Service to deploy HeartSense, a portable, wirelessly charged ECG wearable connecting directly to mobile phones.
Founded by Professor Rameen Shakur at Cambridge Science Park, the company developed the AI-powered device utilizing 86 patents to enable earlier clinical intervention and improved patient outcomes.
Engineered in Cambridge and manufactured in Britain, the system is UKCA approved and ISO 13845 certified, with FDA 510 applications currently in progress to identify cardiovascular disease and stroke risk.
"We did not have a UK ECG manufacturer and reporter until now," said Shakur. The partnership enables Integrated Care Boards to deploy the wearable at scale across community settings.
Empowering patients to monitor heart rhythms at home, the deployment supports a preventative approach to heart disease while reducing pressure on secondary care services and improving access to high-quality diagnostics.
