California Puts First US Billionaire Tax to the Vote
Backers say the measure could raise up to $100 billion over five years to offset federal health care cuts and preserve coverage for millions.
On Nov. 3, California voters will decide on Proposition 40, a measure imposing a one-time 5% wealth tax on residents worth at least $1 billion to address federal healthcare funding cuts.
The Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West argues the tax is necessary to replace an estimated $100 billion in lost federal healthcare funding over five years.
Opponents have aggressively funded the campaign with roughly $96 million, while Google co-founder Sergey Brin contributed more than $100 million to nonprofits designed to block the proposal.
Despite Gov. Gavin Newsom's opposition, the California Democratic Party executive board endorsed the measure, highlighting internal party divisions over state-level wealth taxation.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders declares the measure essential to curb an 'oligarchic society,' while the Hoover Institution projects the tax could cost California $25 billion due to wealth flight.
