- On Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the appointment of a 20-member board for the Salton Sea Conservancy, a new state agency created to oversee restoration, manage habitat, and improve air quality at the shrinking inland lake.
- State Sen. Steve Padilla authored Senate Bill 583 last year to create the body, which addresses health and environmental challenges at the ailing water body where the state has earmarked about half a billion dollars for restoration.
- Several projects are underway as part of a 10-year blueprint, including the 9,400-acre Species Conservation Habitat Project that uses ponds and vegetation to suppress toxic dust and support birds along the Pacific Flyway.
- Silvia Paz, executive director of Alianza Coachella Valley, said the conservancy provides a structure for communities to "align resources, cut through the fragmentation that has slowed progress, and advance real, lasting solutions."
- The board of directors will hold its first meeting on May 14 at the Imperial Irrigation District's La Quinta boardroom to plan rehabilitation efforts for the Salton Sea and surrounding communities.
