Calgary man found guilty of three terrorism-related charges tied to ISIS
Jamal Borhot was convicted of three terrorism counts for joining ISIS in 2013, participating in violence, recruiting, and using firearms with intent to kill, a judge ruled.
- On Monday, Justice Corina Dario, Court of King's Bench judge, found Jamal Borhot, 35, guilty of three counts of participation in a terrorist group and said he willingly joined an Islamic State group over a decade ago.
- Traveling via Turkey, Jamal Borhot entered Syria in 2013 to fight for ISIS with his cousin Hussein Borhot, who was sentenced to 12 years in May 2022.
- The judge detailed recruitment, violence and administrative work, noting Borhot used firearms intending to kill non-Muslims and was imprisoned by ISIS for stealing medication.
- Borhot was taken into custody after court despite Pawel Milczarek asking he remain free until Jan. 16, with Justice Corina Dario saying `Based on the gravity of the offence it would undermine the administration of justice at this point to not revoke bail`.
- It's the latest step in a five-year legal odyssey after Mounties charged Borhot in 2020, with Kent Brown saying Borhot faces up to 10 years per charge, while Pawel Milczarek said the family is devastated.
