Cadbury begin investigation into 99 Flake chocolate after rise in customer complaints
Vendors say the white-tinged Flakes are unsellable, and Cadbury is reviewing whether hot-weather storage or a 2020 production move caused the issue.
Ice cream van owners have raised concerns about discoloured 99 Flakes, describing them as unsellable due to a white tinge appearing on the chocolate coating.
While some vendors claim a quality drop since production moved from the UK to Egypt in 2020, others believe problems stem from wholesalers storing Flakes incorrectly during recent hot weather.
Lawrence Glauser of Lorenzo's Ices in East Yorks believes the coating is a harmless film appearing when cocoa butter melts and separates, rather than a manufacturing defect.
Cadbury stated on Instagram: "We are reviewing what's happened to get back to the high-quality people expect from us," responding to vendor complaints with a formal review.
One Whippy vendor told The Sun: "People expect Cadbury and I don't want to use other brands," highlighting summer demand pressure as heatwaves approach next week.
