By the book: B.C. museum honours Victoria's first female photo entrepreneur
Elizabeth Anne Cavaliere’s book traces Maynard’s 50-year studio career and inventive portrait work, with a launch conversation featuring Sara Angel.
On Oct 1, the Royal Museum celebrates Victoria's first female photo entrepreneur with a book launch for 'Hannah Maynard: Life & Work' by Elizabeth Anne Cavaliere, honoring one of Canada's earliest professional photographers.
Arriving in Victoria in 1862, Maynard opened her studio within a year, just two decades after photography's invention, and operated the business for 50 years photographing diverse clients.
Maynard's studio relocated from Johnston Street to Douglas Street, then moved in 1892 to 49 Pandora Street, now John's Place Restaurant; her work included innovative multiple exposure images and imaginative tableaux vivants.
Cavaliere joins Sara Angel, founder and executive director of the Art Canada Institute, for the launch event; attendees can register for the free program at rbcm.ca/event/hannah-maynard-event beginning at 6 p.m.
Reflecting on her 1912 retirement, Maynard noted, "I think I can say with confidence that we photographed everybody in the town at one time or another," encapsulating her decades of community documentation.
