Andy Burnham Vows to Publish Details of Man City Dealings
Burnham said he will disclose one significant 2021 meeting as pressure grows over claims his comments could affect City’s appeal.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged on Sunday to release details of his meetings with Manchester City owners during his time as Mayor of Greater Manchester, following criticism of his response to the club's financial misconduct ruling.
Last month, Burnham expressed he would be "really concerned" if City's Abu Dhabi owners sold the team, describing them as "a huge partner in the building of modern Manchester" following the guilty financial verdict.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch challenged Burnham to publish "everything" regarding his work with the club, as an independent commission ruled Manchester City arranged "sham" commercial agreements to funnel more than £830m into football operations.
In an interview released Monday, Burnham stated he would disclose these records, insisting there is a clear distinction between football regulatory matters and regional investment, while maintaining the independent process must run its course.
Shadow sports minister Louie French urged the government to "come clean" regarding all ministerial contacts with the club, while Manchester City has lodged an appeal against the commission's guilty verdict on financial regulation breaches.
