Burnham to Urge MPs to Support Drive for Closer EU Relationship
He will argue a closer EU relationship could help curb illegal immigration and lift growth, as ministers seek tweaks to current arrangements.
On Monday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham will address the Commons, arguing for a new European Union deal to tackle illegal immigration and boost economic growth.
Burnham stated that Britain must "face up to the reality that Brexit has done more harm than good," arguing the status quo constitutes a "dereliction of duty."
Immigration control was "weakened by Brexit" because the UK "lost collaboration with our European partners," Burnham noted; the "vast majority of the public" would expect acceptance of a secured deal.
The government intends to initiate a broader conversation about the UK-EU relationship, with a rescheduled summit between the UK and European leaders expected next month.
Last week, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called it "a terrible idea" to "reopen the Brexit debate," warning that businesses would stall amid uncertainty over repeated negotiations.
