Guinea Expels Burkinabé Gold Miners, Draws Ougadougou's Fury
Burkina Faso is mobilizing about 100 buses as officials accuse Guinea of inhumane treatment during the crackdown.
- Guinea expelled more than 8,000 Burkinabé gold miners from the Siguiri district. Authorities deployed tactical teams to execute this crackdown, which forced the mass departure of foreign workers.
- This action followed a new directive targeting artisanal extraction in the country's north-east. Local units enforced the measure in the area, which serves as the nation's main hub for industry activities.
- Security Minister Mahamadou Sana said on Wednesday that citizens were subjected to "inhumane and degrading treatment." He alleged that miners were injured by gunfire and that the state received no prior notice.
- Repatriation efforts began yesterday, November 5, with about 100 buses mobilized to transport miners home. 50 of these vehicles are already en route to Mali, where many affected individuals are currently awaiting their return.
- Miners now hope for reintegration support from their country. "We have lost a great deal," said Abdoul Kaboré, one of the deportees, who is currently seeking help after the sudden removal from the region.

Conakry's decision to ban the anarchic ordeal in the Siguiri region is controversial. In an attempt to extinguish the "fire" and calm the minds, Guinean MP Abdoulaye Kourouma claims that this is a sovereign measure, not a targeting of Burkinabe. In a plea for Guinean sovereignty, the parliamentarian wanted to deconstruct the narrative of a community targeting, while praising the pan-Africanist commitment of President Mamadi Doumbouya.
