Stowaway Baby Rabbits Found on North Sea Drilling Rig

Crew members caught the rabbits and returned all three to a wildlife rescue centre after a container carried them offshore by accident.

  • Three baby rabbits were rescued from a drilling rig in the North Sea after stowing away in a container from Dundee. The trio traveled to the Cygnus gas field, 93 miles off the Lincolnshire coast.
  • It is believed the bunnies sought a "nice warm place to hide" in an offshore container in Dundee. The container was transported to Aberdeen and loaded onto a vessel bound for the Valaris Norway rig.
  • Upon arrival, two rabbits "took freedom and were found running around the pipe deck." The Valaris crew kept them safe in the radio room before transporting them back to Aberdeen for care at New Arc Wildlife Rescue.
  • The FS Aquarius later returned to the Cygnus field, where crew discovered a third bunny hiding in a forklift pocket. This stowaway was rescued and reunited with its siblings at the rescue centre.
  • All three rabbits are now doing well at New Arc Wildlife Rescue near Ellon. Fletcher Group, which operates the Aquarius vessel, added, "Luckily they all seem to be doing well, but that's down to the crews taking very good care of them.
