Union Berlin Appoints Lustrinelli as Coach After His Success with Swiss Team Thun
The Swiss coach led Thun to promotion and a championship, and Union said his development-focused style matches its long-term vision.
- On Thursday, Union Berlin appointed Mauro Lustrinelli as head coach, tasking the 50-year-old Swiss with leading the team next season. Lustrinelli succeeds Marie-Louise Eta, who served as interim coach for the final five matches.
- After steering Union to an 11th-place finish in the 18-team Bundesliga, Eta will return to coaching the club's women's team next season. She took over the men's team in April following Steffan Baumgart's departure.
- Lustrinelli joins Union following successful stints leading the Switzerland Under-21 team to two European titles and guiding Thun to a Swiss championship. He previously played 12 games for Switzerland and competed in the 2006 World Cup.
- "His approach to the game also aligns perfectly with our vision," Union sporting director Horst Heldt said. The club aims to play proactive football and increasingly integrate young players under Lustrinelli's leadership.
- Lustrinelli's appointment marks another Swiss coaching hire for the club, following Urs Fischer's tenure. Fischer led Union to its first Bundesliga promotion in 2019 and Champions League qualification in 2023.
