Vulnerability to heat waves varies greatly from one area to another within cities
Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe as a result of climate change. Heat waves are a prime example, as they have direct effects on health, thermal comfort and the livability of cities. That is why it is vital to conduct climate risk assessments to guide cities' adaptation policies and prioritize action in the most vulnerable areas.
EHU's heat wave vulnerability maps analyze Bilbao, Madrid and Cáceres to identify where to prioritize urban adaptation to extreme heat.

The methodology, applied in Bilbao, Madrid and Cáceres, has shown that socio-economic conditions and the characteristics of the urban fabric have a significant influence on vulnerability. The tool generates vulnerability maps that help determine where adaptation measures to combat heatwaves should be prioritised.
The SAREN (Sustainable And Resilient built ENvironment) group at the University of the Basque Country (EHU) has developed a methodology to assess the impact of urban buildings and outdoor public spaces on the environment.
