Bug Fire burns 15,000 acres along California-Nevada border near Reno
Cal Fire said the blaze is 3% contained as Southern Nevada crews head north to help protect stations and support evacuations.
- On Monday, Cal Fire reported the Bug Fire, which began Saturday near the California-Nevada border, has burned 15,000 acres with containment at only 3%, forcing evacuation orders for thousands of residents north of Reno.
- The Bug began Saturday near Highway 395 in Lassen County, California, before spreading into Washoe County, Nevada; a second blaze, the Fred Mountain Fire, started Sunday and has burned more than 1,300 acres northeast of the larger fire.
- Two fires near Reno have forced over 5,000 people to evacuate their homes, and the Reno Livestock Event Center is nearing capacity, housing more than 300 animals displaced by the emergency.
- Crews from Southern Nevada, including the Clark County Fire Department and Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, deployed Monday to backfill Reno-area stations, allowing local firefighters to focus on battling the expanding Bug Fire.
- Wildfires burning across the western United States have stretched national firefighting resources, with the National Interagency Fire Center reporting more than a dozen fires exceeding 100,000 acres and 29,000 personnel assigned to fight fires nationwide.
