The government budget deficit rose to 8 billion euros in the first half of this year, reports Statistics Netherlands (CBS). This is the largest deficit in a first half of the year since 2021, when the Netherlands was grappling with the coronavirus crisis. In the first half of last year, the deficit was 5 billion euros.
In the first six months of 2026, the Government of the Netherlands spent Euro273 billion, an increase of 5 per cent over the same period last year, and expenditure on public administration, including wages and procurement of goods and services, increased by 5 per cent to Euro92 billion, and the Netherlands also increased European Union contributions by Euro2 billion.
