Buddy Holly crosswalk in Texas hometown to be removed following governor’s order on road safety
Lubbock will remove the Buddy Holly crosswalk to comply with state and federal rules banning symbols on roads, risking loss of transportation funding, officials said.
Lubbock city officials say they must remove a crosswalk featuring Buddy Holly's iconic glasses to comply with a directive from Texas to rid roads of political messages and artwork.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott directed the state's transportation department to enforce federal guidelines prohibiting symbols, flags, and other markings conveying political messages on roadways.
Abbott's order followed a letter from former U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy stating that intersections and crosswalks must be kept free from distractions.
