BT warns thousands of customers over landline shutdowns in these 12 areas
BT Openreach will decommission up to 4,600 exchanges nationwide, affecting thousands of households as part of a multi-phase shift to fibre and Digital Voice technology.
- BT's Openreach has begun issuing `stop sell` orders to broadband providers such as BT, Sky and TalkTalk and will carry out the next phase of landline shutdowns in the coming weeks and months.
- Openreach says the shift is intended to move the UK away from analogue copper-based telephone and broadband systems toward full-fibre/FTTP technology and Digital Voice calling, which offer faster speeds and software-based switching.
- The Deddington pilot showed that the Deddington Exchange was fully decommissioned after around 1,800 copper lines upgraded to full fibre at Banbury Exchange, while James Lilley said migration of millions is a major undertaking.
- Thousands of households and businesses will be affected in the coming weeks while communications providers can reduce costs by consolidating equipment and space.
- Openreach plans to decommission thousands of exchanges and retain 1,000 `super digital exchanges` in four phases through the early 2030s, with 12 more areas scheduled next.
