Diamondbacks' Vargas, Dodgers' Muncy Injured on Violent Collision at First Base
Both players left after a fifth-inning collision that sent Max Muncy to the dugout bleeding and left Ildemaro Vargas clutching his left knee.
On Thursday night at Chase Field, Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy and Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Ildemaro Vargas collided at first base in the fifth inning, forcing both players to leave the game.
With D-backs starter Ryne Nelson failing to cover the bag, Muncy hit a ground ball that Vargas fielded before attempting to reach first base ahead of the runner.
After the collision, both players remained on the ground for nearly five minutes; Muncy held his arm while bleeding from the nose, and Vargas clutched his left knee.
Following the injuries, Pavin Smith replaced Vargas at first base and Santiago Espinal took over for Muncy as the pinch runner.
There has been no immediate announcement regarding the severity of the injuries sustained by either player following the collision at Chase Field.
