Browns QB race under Monken remains wide open as offseason enters organized practice stage
Todd Monken said both quarterbacks are doing well and will rotate through drills before the Browns name a starter by the Sept. 13 opener.
Cleveland Browns coach Todd Monken rotated Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders during voluntary organized team activity practices on Wednesday, evaluating both quarterbacks for the Jacksonville opener.
Watson, who missed last year after tearing his Achilles, has gone 9-10 as Cleveland's starter with 19 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions and an 80.7 passer rating since arriving from Houston in 2022.
Sanders, a fifth-round pick, started the final seven games last season, finishing 3-4 with a 68.1 passer rating while struggling with footwork and playbook concepts. Monken said he has "come miles" in his understanding of concepts.
Monken plans to rotate quarterbacks until naming a starter by the Sept. 13 opener at Jacksonville, though he expressed frustration about interceptions during 11-on-11 drills.
Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett remains absent from team practices but is expected to join mandatory minicamp beginning June 9, with Monken not yet having met the star pass rusher.
