Browns Rookie Spencer Fano Nails Down Starting Left Tackle Job After Scuffle with Jared Verse
The 25-year-old pass rusher is energizing the defense and mentoring younger players, according to Browns defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire.
- Following the offseason trade of Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams, new pass rusher Jared Verse has emerged as the defensive leader at Cleveland Browns training camp. Verse told coaches, "I just want to be a leader, I want to bring guys up with me, intentionally elevate the guy next to me."
- The 25-year-old Verse recorded 124 tackles, 12.0 sacks, and five fumbles forced in 34 games with the Rams, earning two Pro Bowl selections. While replacing nine-year veteran Garrett remains difficult, Verse is already rallying teammates during defensive drills.
- Spencer Fano moved to the first team on Saturday after holding his own during an intense practice skirmish against Verse. Fano proved a quick study, impressing coaches by not backing down from the Pro Bowl edge rusher.
- Veteran Dawand Jones now faces mounting pressure to secure his roster spot, with Coach Todd Monken explaining before Monday's practice that Jones is "fighting to make the team." Having started only 20 games in three seasons, Jones must prove he belongs among the top 10 linemen.
- Late August roster shuffles present further uncertainty for Jones, as the Browns' offensive staff may release him if they identify a preferred player from other organizations. With his contract expiring after this season, Jones cannot afford another injury setback.
