British man charged with directing Somalia-based terror group

Prosecutors say the 43-year-old trained at a Kismayu camp and took part in battles as part of a long-running investigation.

  • Jermaine Grant, 43, was charged Thursday with directing Al-Shabaab activities between December 31, 2007, and January 1, 2010, plus attending a commando training camp in Kismayu and possessing an AK47 for terrorist purposes.
  • Acting Commander Kris Wright of Counter Terrorism Policing London stated, "These are serious charges and come as the result of a long-running investigation," explaining the inquiry into Grant's alleged involvement.
  • Frank Ferguson, head of the Crown Prosecution Service's special crime and counter terrorism division, confirmed charges for directing terrorist activities, attending the Al-Shabaab training camp in Kismayu, and possessing an AK47.
  • Grant will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Thursday morning, with prosecutors reminding the public that criminal proceedings are active and the defendant has the right to a fair trial.
  • A 2025 UK Government assessment labeled Al-Shabaab a "persistent threat" in Mogadishu, citing its responsibility for the 2019 DusitD2 attack, 2015 Garissa University shooting, and 2013 Westgate Shopping Mall attack.
