Pub Officially Crowned the Oldest in England
Tree-ring dating and documents back the claim, ending years of debate over the pub’s age and continuous licensing.
Historic England officially recognized The George Inn in Norton St Philip, Somerset, as England's oldest licensed pub, according to building archaeologist James Wright. The designation ends years of fierce debate over the country's most ancient boozer.
Carthusian monks from nearby Hinton Priory originally commissioned the building in the 14th Century to provide accommodation for merchants attending monastery markets and fairs. The structure has remained in 'continuous' service for over 600 years.
James Wright utilized scientific tree-ring dating on timber felled between 1430 and 1432 to verify the age. This evidence dispels myths where folklore and inaccurate pub signs obscure the actual archaeological development.
Even after 630 years, the establishment continues to operate as a Grade listed building. The inn remains in 'continuous' service today, serving as a living monument to medieval hospitality.
Fierce debate over England's oldest pub designation led Guinness World Records to stop awarding the title in 2000. Historic England's archaeological findings now separate verified national treasures from local legends, clarifying centuries of pub history.
