Britain to Fund Repairs to Chernobyl Power Plant Hit by Russian Drone Attack
The £17 million pledge is part of a wider international programme led by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, officials said.
On Thursday, the British government announced £17 million in funding for Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant repairs, addressing ventilation and confinement systems damaged by a Russian drone strike last year.
Corrosion from the strike threatens the plant's structural integrity and environmental safety, prompting an international effort coordinated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Ukrainian government, and G7 donors.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham hosted President Volodymyr Zelensky at Downing Street on Wednesday, assuring the Ukrainian leader Britain remains "behind you and that will not change" during "dark and difficult days."
Britain also accelerated deliveries of air defence missiles to counter heavy bombardment from Russian forces, while Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband declared the UK will "stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and will do so until they prevail."
Amid strained relations between Ukraine and the United States following Donald Trump's recent diesel arrangement with Russia, the UK continues to "maintain pressure on Russia" while the nation navigates complex security challenges.
