Britain investigates Microsoft over business software dominance
The probe will examine whether bundling Windows, Word, Excel and Teams weakens competition and could lead to targeted interventions.
On Thursday, Britain launched an antitrust investigation into Microsoft's dominance in business software using new regulatory powers to determine if the company holds "strategic market status" in the sector.
The CMA will examine whether bundling Windows, Word, Excel, Teams, and Copilot weakens competition, marking the fourth investigation under powers granted to the regulator last year.
CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell noted the probe evaluates how AI competitors integrate with Microsoft's software, alongside recurring concerns regarding the company's cloud licensing practices.
Microsoft stated it is "committed to working quickly and constructively with the CMA," while a potential "strategic market status" designation could lead to targeted interventions to encourage competition.
The British probe concludes by February 2027, adding to global scrutiny of Microsoft, which faces active antitrust investigations within the European Union and the United States.
