Bret Bielema Takes Dig at SEC, College Football Playoff Rankings
On Friday, Illinois coach Bret Bielema led the Fighting Illini to a 24-13 victory over Nebraska, clinching bowl eligibility. Bielema suggested his team would rank as a "top-15 team" if competing in the SEC.
College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday placed 10 SEC teams in the top 25, sparking frustration among Big Ten coaches who alleged bias toward the conference despite the SEC lacking undefeated teams.
Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti accused ESPN analysts of following "the company line" regarding rankings. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz joked, "We're not ESPN, so we probably won't make the rankings."
Bielema maintained that a 9-3 team can still secure playoff eligibility, emphasizing the season's outcome is decided on the field rather than by committee perception.
Illinois aims to extend its four-game winning streak next week when the team travels to the Rose Bowl to face UCLA with a 6-3 record.
