Young Contractor Killed in Horrific Workplace Accident
The contractor died at the scene after a steel beam fell during reline work on a dormant blast furnace, BlueScope Steel said in a preliminary assessment.
- On Monday at about 10:30am, a contractor, a man in his mid-20s, was struck by a falling steel beam opposite the No.5 Stockhouse at Port Kembla Steelworks and died at the scene.
- BlueScope announced in 2023 it would spend $1.15 billion to lower emissions and extend the steelworks' life, aiming for a decarbonisation goal of 60 per cent reduction.
- BlueScope said its preliminary assessment found a crane lifting a steel beam fell and fatally struck the worker; emergency services and paramedics freed him, but he died at the scene, with police investigating.
- 'Work in the immediate area was ceased immediately', Mr Callinan said, and BlueScope Steel said its immediate priority is supporting its people, first responders and the family while cooperating with authorities.
- Work to reline the dormant No.6 blast furnace got underway in 2024 as the No.5 blast furnace approaches end of life between 2026 and 2030; the Port Kembla Steelworks, south of Wollongong, spans 760 hectares, and a coroner will prepare a report.
