Brazil seizes over 1,100 weapons and 1.5 tons of drugs from US, says official
The pact will share cargo data in real time and help authorities trace 1,168 seized weapons and 1.5 tons of narcotics, officials said.
- The Brazilian government announced a joint initiative with the United States to combat organized crime, integrating data from Brazil's Federal Revenue Service with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
- Federal Revenue Secretary Robinson Barreirinhas reported that authorities seized more than 1,100 weapons arriving from the U.S. over the past 12 months, alongside more than 1.5 tons of drugs confiscated in the first quarter.
- Using the new DESARMA information-sharing system, authorities identified 35 incidents in the last 12 months involving the seizure of 1,168 items, weighing about 550 kilograms, primarily shipped from Florida using fraudulent techniques.
- Finance Minister Dario Durigan noted the agreement follows lobbying from Eduardo Bolsonaro and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, while President Luiz Inacio Lula continues pressing to arrest the owner of Refit.
- Washington is reportedly considering designating Brazil-based gangs Primeiro Comando and Comando Vermelho as terrorist organizations, though U.S. officials have not publicly confirmed any such designation.
