Brazil Says Neymar, Sidelined by a Calf Injury, Isn't Traveling for an Exhibition Game vs. Egypt
The 34-year-old forward is expected to miss the exhibition against Egypt after scans showed a calf injury and doctors projected a two- to three-week recovery.
The Brazilian Football Confederation announced Thursday that forward Neymar will remain in New Jersey to undergo treatment for a calf injury, missing Saturday's exhibition match against Egypt.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti recalled the 34-year-old to the national side this year despite Neymar having been sidelined for more than 600 days following a knee injury in October 2023.
Team doctors expect Neymar to remain sidelined for two to three weeks, though the forward remains Brazil's all-time leading goal scorer with 79 goals.
Brazil named 32-year-old defender Marquinhos captain earlier this week, while FIFA regulations permit replacing an injured player up to one day before the team's first tournament match.
Brazil's opening World Cup match against Morocco is scheduled for June 13 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, yet it remains unclear whether Neymar will recover in time to participate.
