Brayton Purcell LLP Highlights Investigative Report on California's Silicosis Crisis Linked to Artificial Stone
Regulators will draft emergency and permanent standards after California officials identified more than 560 silicosis cases and at least 31 deaths since 2019.
The California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board voted to begin rulemaking that would prohibit artificial stone containing more than 1% crystalline silica, initiating development of an emergency temporary standard.
Since 2019, California health officials identified more than 560 cases of silicosis and at least 31 deaths, numbers experts warn are likely underestimates given artificial stone's at least 90% crystalline silica content.
Reporter Semantha Raquel Norris documented the crisis in a May 27 report for Capital & Main, capturing emotional testimony from a May 21 public hearing in Los Angeles regarding severe respiratory disease and lung transplants.
Brayton Purcell LLP, representing hundreds of individuals diagnosed with silicosis, is calling attention to the investigation, with attorney Nevin having attended the May 21 hearing to document workers' testimony.
Public health officials caution that additional cases are expected in the coming years due to prior exposures, as artificial stone also contains approximately 10% other toxins including glues, dyes, and resins known as VOCs.
