In Berlin, a memorial session commemorated the victims of the popular uprising in the GDR on 17 June 1953. Federal Minister of Economics Reiche and Berlin's Governing Mayor Wegner praised the demonstrators at that time as courageous fighters for freedom and democracy at the Seestraße cemetery.
