Boy Killed After Video Display Board Falls at Brevard County Elementary School

District officials are inspecting similar boards across campuses as police investigate how the wall-mounted display detached and killed the student.

  • A 6-year-old student at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay died Wednesday after a large video display board fell on the child, according to Brevard Public Schools and the Palm Bay Police Department.
  • School staff immediately called 911 and began lifesaving measures after the board fell, then transported the student to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where medical personnel continued resuscitation efforts before the child died.
  • Deputy Chief Nick Szczepanski of the Palm Bay Police Department described the incident as a "tragic accident," while investigators from the Special Victims Unit and Major Case Unit are actively examining the scene.
  • BPS officials stated, "All kinds of adults doing everything they could to save this child's life," as the district offers counseling and support services to students and staff in the days ahead.
  • While officials have not disclosed how the display board fell, BPS will not release additional information about the student to protect the family's privacy during the ongoing investigation.
