Boy, 16, dies in blaze next to Old Kent Road fire station
A 16-year-old died and another was seriously injured in a first-floor flat fire tackled by 25 firefighters near Old Kent Road Fire Station, with cause under investigation.
On March 18, a 16-year-old boy was pronounced dead after a flat fire in a first-floor flat on Cooper's Road, Southwark, with police responding around 3pm.
Investigators from the Brigade's Fire Investigation Unit and the Metropolitan Police are probing the cause of the incident, believed to be non‑suspicious.
Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled the first-floor blaze after the Brigade's Control Office took the first call at 2:57pm; the fire was under control by about 4:34pm.
Next-of-Kin have received welfare support as emergency services manage the aftermath, and a second 16-year-old taken to hospital with serious facial injuries awaits an update.
The blaze occurred next to Old Kent Road Fire Station, an unusual location for a fatal flat fire, as an Old Kent Road appliance returned from another call and crews tackled a Tulse Hill blaze involving 70 firefighters.
