Boy, 16, charged with murder of classmate in Johor

  • On Thursday, a 16-year-old boy was charged at the Batu Pahat Magistrate Court with the murder of classmate Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal at SMK Dato' Seth in Yong Peng.
  • The alleged incident occurred in the school hall between 2.30pm and 4pm on Oct 3, where Irene Sofiya was discovered covered in blood by her grandmother after failing to return home.
  • Under Section 302 of the Penal Code, conviction carries the death penalty or 30 to 40 years' imprisonment; however, the Child Act prohibits capital punishment for those under 18.
  • Because the case falls under High Court jurisdiction, no plea was recorded and no bail was granted, with the court scheduling Dec 22 for the next mention pending autopsy reports.
  • Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for a swift probe into the killing, while Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced investigations into school security, noting CCTVs did not cover the hall.
