Boy, 14, Drowns After Going Into Water at Dock

Emergency crews searched for more than 3 hours before the boy was recovered and pronounced dead, police said.

  • A 14-year-old boy died after entering Millwall Outer Dock in east London on Monday, August 3. Emergency services recovered his body at 10:30pm after more than three hours of searching and pronounced him dead at the scene.
  • Despite being a 'no swimming zone,' the dock features a deck used for water sports. The teenager was part of a larger group cooling off during London's latest heatwave, the Metro reported.
  • The Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, and London Ambulance Service launched an extensive search immediately after the alarm was raised. Responders deployed a search and rescue boat and helicopter support in efforts to locate the boy.
  • Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter urged the public to avoid open water and swim only in designated areas. The boy's family is receiving support from specialist officers, and the death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious.
  • Local resident Ivan Alexander witnessed anti-social behavior at the site, where Tower Hamlets Council previously employed wardens to patrol the area. Those security measures have since been scrapped, raising questions about oversight at the location.
