"Moana" Could Lose Disney $125 Million
The remake’s weak start and $395 million in combined costs have raised doubts it can recover in theaters, trades reported.
Disney's live-action Moana opened to $95 million globally on its debut weekend, earning $43 million domestically and $52 million internationally, falling short of the studio's $60 million domestic target.
Arriving less than two years after Moana 2, the animated sequel that grossed over $1 billion, the film faced intense competition from family releases and audience fatigue, analysts said.
Audiences gave the film a 90% positive Rotten Tomatoes score and an A-minus CinemaScore, signaling viewer approval despite critical skepticism. Production reached $250 million with at least $100 million in global marketing.
Analysts estimate Disney could lose $100 million to $125 million on the project by its theatrical close. The opening trails the $92 million average for Disney's live-action remakes historically.
Disney has recently abandoned its traditional multi-decade wait between animated classics and live-action remakes, accelerating releases to feed Disney+ and maximize franchise value. This strategy shift now faces headwinds as market saturation impacts box office returns.
